I think most important thing for a successful knowledge worker is having a mechanism/framework for learning. Because personally I feel in a knowledge working environment, it is easy to getting behind time to time.
This is mostly happening when you are living in a comfortable safezone posion. Money is good, work is occupying your almost all of the time, so you don’t have additional time to spent for update with the world. Problem is after a while you realize, you are far behind with some obivious areas. I have two kind of that experience though my career so far. Luckily I have a framework of learning, which I build through out the years that works with me, but unfortunately this ( my framework ) takes much time compare to other methods use by many others. My learning framework is building around a reference book.
What I realize though the years were, problem of learning in current context is having too much information scattered everywhere by pieses. so It is hard to understand anything and there so many marketing buzzword that discourages you for undestanding anything.
Most recent example is about AI Engineering. I had no experiece other than use of agentic coding applications in this area. What I realize was I laging behind when some intersting AI talk is happening it was really hard to understand for me. Problem was lacking of basics. I went to my old learning way, thought of taking break since it required significant amount of time for me to go through the process and I don’t wanted to my job to suffer. Why I Left My Associate Director Role to Go All-In on AI Reference book I choose for this is Chip Huyen’s AI Engineering. I am going thought the book, but when I face difficult chapter, I always looking into other resouces for easily understand what is tries to say. This takes time. But finally I would able to understand in structured manner and would understand what I know and what I don’t know.
So far my framwork worked for me, in the past I have gone through several these kind of learning chapters as now. ( “Chris Richardson’s Microservices Patterns” , Laurentiu Spilca’s Spring Security in Action” and honestly these book did amazing things in my career ).
